13 Reasons I’m Just Like Hannah Baker

  1. I have been the new girl in school
  2. I felt alone
  3. At my old school, I was considered a whore and I was still a virgin
  4. I felt empty
  5. I know what its like to feel sexually violated
  6. I tried to tell my school counselor about the physical abuse in my home and she did nothing but call my parents (the people who abused me)
  7. I had some pretty crappy friends who totally stabbed my back and hurt me
  8. I didn’t care about anything anymore
  9. I tried to reach out to friends and throw hints to family but no one listened
  10. I was told I was just trying to seek attention
  11. I went to parties to try to feel happy by getting drunk
  12. I fell in love with a guy who was popular and he cheated on me and broke my heart and didn’t care at all that I was in pain
  13. I eventually chased after any boy that would pay attention to me so I could feel loved; even if it was just a little

All of these reasons and I’m here to tell you that  I am still alive.

But there is one big difference between me and Hannah Baker:

I found Jesus

Even though I felt like everyone else around me didn’t care, God did. Even though I felt empty and alone, He was there waiting for me to cry out for Him and seek Him. Even though I felt violated and defiled, He renewed me. I no longer feel empty, gross, alone, depressed or like an outcast. Once I gave my life to Him, He has completely changed it.

You are not alone. You do have worth. It gets better. God DOES love you. He is there for you. He thinks you are more special than anything. He desires you more than that boy who broke your heart and cherishes you more than that friend who turned their back on you.

  • Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, evenwhen we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved—
  • 2 Corinthians 12:10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
  • Hebrews 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need

This is amazing. Thank you for being so transparent and sharing these moments from your life. I see this list as not a list of attacks, but of victories. You have overcome. You have 13 reasons to write, to encourage, to give wisdom. You are seasoned with life’s hardships, that is motivation to reach those who are hurting. Keep writing! 🙂
